Avi Selvig, the owner and designer was born in a small village in southern Greece. It was in those early years that she believes her love affair with wool began. She and her family moved to Canada when Avi was still young and eventually settled in the town of Penticton, B.C. At 17 she learned to knit native style chunky sweaters and instantly fell in love with big natural wool.
Drawing inspiration from her Greek roots, Avis’ blankets and pillows emote a sense of elegance that is functional and has timeless style—proving to be a fabulous piece of décor for the home year round as well as a comforting throw for chilly nights. She also designs elegant scarves, toques and other accessories in natural colors. Always having considered herself a creative, she is intrigued by size and texture, and the chunky, contrasting proportions that can be crafted to accentuate the beauty of the wool.
Most of her knits are made with natural Canadian wool. The chunky wool is hand spun on a large wheel that was custom made for her, spinning the wool to strengthen it so that it doesn’t shed but still has the hallmark soft and lofty feel that wool is known for. She is fascinated by natural fiber and believes it to have healing attributes.
Wool is a naturally antibacterial, sustainable and ecofriendly resource. Wool naturally resists water and fire. Wool uses less energy to produce than manmade fibres. It is biodegradable which is good for the environment, decomposing within a few years and can act as a fertilizer. It is breathable which can keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
